The heads. That's the only difference. Both toothbrushes use the exact same handle, the same 62,000 VPM sonic motor, the same 5 brushing modes with 3 intensity levels, and the same low-EMF engineering. What changes is the bristle on the head:

Boar bristles are firm. Choose boar for a deeper, more powerful clean.

Horse bristles are soft. Choose horse for gentle brushing, sensitive gums, or receding gumlines.

Both are 100% natural, plastic-free, and fit the same handle, so you can swap between them in seconds. Your toothbrush comes with 2 brush heads in the box, matching the bristle type you choose, and replacement heads are available in 4-packs in both boar and horse.

For optimal hygiene and cleaning performance, we recommend replacing your brush head every 1 to 3 months. Because PRIMALS heads are made from 100% natural boar or horse bristles woven into a bamboo base, they wear differently than synthetic nylon, so it helps to watch the bristles themselves rather than just the calendar.

Replace your brush head sooner if you notice any of the following:

• Frayed, bent, or splayed bristles. Once bristles lose their shape, they can't reach between teeth or along the gumline effectively.
• Loss of firmness or flex. Boar bristles should stay firm and dense for a deep clean. Horse bristles should stay soft and flexible. When either starts to feel limp or flattened, cleaning power drops.
• Reduced cleaning effectiveness. If your teeth don't feel as smooth and clean after brushing, the bristles are likely worn down.
• Bristle loss or split bundles. Some minor shedding is normal in the first 1 to 2 weeks as the bamboo adjusts to humidity, but ongoing bristle loss or split bundles mean it's time for a fresh head.
• After illness. Replace your head after a cold, flu, or any infection to avoid reintroducing bacteria into your mouth.

Tip: Stand your brush head upright to air dry between uses and rinse thoroughly after brushing. Proper drying keeps the natural bristles in better condition for longer.

Quick unit note: meters show magnetic field in either microtesla (µT) or milligauss (mG). 10 mG = 1 µT. So 100 mG is 10 µT.

We'd encourage you to test it. Our numbers are published so you can check them, and a few people have. Here's what to expect.

Our readings were taken with the handle as close as possible to the meter's sensor without directly touching it, on the highest intensity setting (since you are not supposed to directly touch the object you are testing with an EMF meter). That's the harshest and most accurate possible measurement, and it's how we measured the leading sonic brush too, so the comparison is fair. It is not what your body sees in use. The magnetic field from a small motor drops off steeply within a few centimetres, and at brushing distance the reading is a fraction of the close distance figure.

At contact, the PRIMALS brush reads about 17 µT, which is 170 mG. The leading sonic brush reads about 88 µT, or 880 mG, under identical conditions. For scale, the ICNIRP public exposure guideline for magnetic fields is 200 µT, or 2,000 mG. Our contact reading sits at roughly 8% of that guideline. The leading sonic brush sits at 44%.

A note on meters. For our test we used the ERICKHILL RT-100 EMF meter which is the best meter to use in this application. Many popular home EMF meters, including the TriField TF2 and similar building biology instruments, are only designed to detect faint ambient fields in living spaces and top out at 100 to 175 mG. Any motorised device pressed against the sensor will exceed that, ours included. An "off scale" or "over range" reading at contact is the meter's ceiling, not a measurement of the brush. Move the handle a few centimetres away and the meter will read normally.

To get a comparison that means something, set the meter to magnetic field, get away from any plugged in electronics, hold the running brush a few centimetres from the sensor, and then measure any other electric toothbrush the same way. That gap is the whole point.

No electric toothbrush is zero EMF. Ours is the lowest we've measured, and we'll keep publishing the numbers.

• In your first few uses, a small number of bristles may naturally shed as the bamboo adjusts to your local humidity. This is completely normal and stops after 1 to 2 weeks.
• Stand the toothbrush upright on the charging dock after each use for optimal drying.
• Run the bristles under warm water before use to soften them slightly.
• Leave a 0.5 to 1mm gap between the brush head and handle for proper vibration transfer.
• Replace your brush head every 1 to 3 months for optimal hygiene.
• If bristles flatten quickly, you may be brushing with too much force. Use lighter pressure and circular motions.
